1.Bilbo and the dwarves are somewhat discouraged by the fact that the dragon was still alive and the dwarves wanted bilbo to go inside the cave and have a look around while invisible.
2. Bilbo steals the cup because he wants to prove he's a good burgalar.
3.Tolkein describes Smaug as a vast red-golden dragon,with a coiled tail and large red scales.
4.Bilbo tries to trick smaug by telling him riddles- dragons can't resist riddles.
5.Bilbo mistakes dealing with smaug by telling him that they did not come for gold only, but revenge as well.
6.Bilbo and the dwarves are transfixed by the vast collection of gold and will do anything to get it.
