Chapter 12 Questions

Chapter 12
1.Write characterizations of Bilbo and the dwarves' based on this chapter.
Well in the beginning of the chapter Bilbo and the Dwarves spirits are very high but go down when they find the door but cant open it and the dwarves start to think of Bilbo as a leader because he helped them escape from the Wood-Elves.
2.What motives Bilbo to steal the cup?
Well Bilbo wants them all to believe that he is a burglar so he steals the cup to show them but he didn't know that dragons know when something of theirs is stolen so Smaug wakes up and finds out something is stolen.
3. What techniques does Tolkien use to characterize Smaug?
HE describes him as a big dragon, and underneath him is gold because he has been laying on his gold bed for so long, the weakest part of the dragon is their stomach because it is squishy, so he put gems on it as a shield.
4. Explain how Bilbo tries to trick Smaug and how Smaug tries to influence Bilbo. Is either successful? Explain. Include a clarification of Bilbo's riddle-talk.
Bilbo and Smaug are telling riddles because Smaug asks what Bilbo's name was but Bilbo doesn't want to tell him, and he didn't want to refuse because he thinks that Smaug might burn him, and he doesn't want to tell him Because Smaug might find out things about him, like his weaknesses so they have a riddle competition, and in Bilbo's riddles he tells about his adventures, in the end he is running off and Bilbo says something very rude and Smaug spits fire after him.
5. What mistakes does Bilbo make in dealing with Smaug, in your opinion?
I think he only did one thing wrong, which was when he was running off he said something very rude to Smaug so smaug got angry and he spit fire at Bilbo which burned his ankles and the hair on the back of his head.
6. What effect does the hoard of gold have on the various characters?
Some of them were amazed and proud of Bilbo because he had gotten the cup. But after Smaug was looking for them and the cup so then the dwarves changed their minds and got mad at Bilbo.
