Chapters 14 and 15
Chapter 14:
1. They think that Thorin was forging gold.
2. Bard actually cares about the townspeople, where as the Master tries to get away rather than fighting the dragon.
3. The setting of the town is important because that's where the dragon was killed and the town was destroyed so they went after the dwarves.
4. Well, seeing as I have read this book(I don't remember much but I remember this part) I sorta figured(and knew) the dragon would attack the town and Bard would kill him. It's also somewhat obvious- seeing as they didn't know where he was and could only be causing havoc and evilness.(it is obvious isn't it?)
5.The wood elves were motivated when the townspeople seek revenge against the dwarves.
I think (and know) that there will be a battle against the dwarves, elves, and humans. and Thorin dies......=(
Chapter 15
1. Talking animals have mostly helped the dwarves and Bilbo, by telling them what they need to do next.
2. Their enemies include: elves, goblins, laketown people, and all the other wild creatures that want to kill them or want their treasure.
3. They hid inside the cave and sent the raven to get Thorin's cousin Dain and his army.
4. To put it simply, Thorin would rather have died than give up his gold to Laketown and Bard. As for Bilbo and the others, they didn't want to give it up either.
5. The songs in the beginning talked about getting the gold where the songs at the end talked about having and reclaiming it.
6. I think Bard shouldn't expect anything because the gold belongs to Thorin because he IS the King Under the Mountain after all. also, it isn't the dwarves fault that the dragon destroyed their town- it was bound to happen anyways.
7. Thorin wants the Arkenstone and bard wants to take everything about, and the laketown people are being somehwta unfair. The dwarves didn't do anything wrong.

3. What techniques does Tolkien use to characterize Smaug?
HE describes him as a big dragon, and underneath him is gold because he has been laying on his gold bed for so long, the weakest part of the dragon is their stomach because it is squishy, so he put gems on it as a shield.
4. Explain how Bilbo tries to trick Smaug and how Smaug tries to influence Bilbo. Is either successful? Explain. Include a clarification of Bilbo's riddle-talk.
Bilbo and Smaug are telling riddles because Smaug asks what Bilbo's name was but Bilbo doesn't want to tell him, and he didn't want to refuse because he thinks that Smaug might burn him, and he doesn't want to tell him Because Smaug might find out things about him, like his weaknesses so they have a riddle competition, and in Bilbo's riddles he tells about his adventures, in the end he is running off and Bilbo says something very rude and Smaug spits fire after him.
5. What mistakes does Bilbo make in dealing with Smaug, in your opinion?

Chapter 6 questions
1. How does Bilbo react to the loss of the company? How does the compant react tot he loss of Bilbo? What conclusions can you draw?
Bilbo reacts going a little crazy. The company reacts by being sort of mad at Gandalf because he didn't choose someone with more wits. The conclusion that i can come up with is that they will end up finding eachother and getting in an arguement.
2.Compare and contrast Bilbo's story of what happened to him with what the narrator said happened to him. How do you account for the differences? what would you have done if you were Bilbo?
Well when i compare and contrast between the narrator's story and Bilbo's story i get that they are very different Bilbo said that he was brave and ran from Gollum and he leaves out the part that he got the ring because he doesnt want them to know that he has the magical ring so they dont take it fro him even. If i were Bilbo i would have told the entire story to the company because it would make it much easier so i wouldn't have a quilty conscience from hiding the fact that i had the ring if i said i didn't.
3.How has Bilbo changed since the first chapter?
The way that Bilbo has changed is that he is more barave now and he seems to like the company a lot more now that he actually knows them. He has also changed by knowing how to steal so he can live up to his label of being the great thief.
4.Riddle competitions have been used sinceprimitive times to decide the fate of someone or something. How is this tradition reflective in the compant's reaction to Bilbo's story?
It is refected by how they see what riddles Bilbo has used to stump Gollum. Their reaction wasa surprise to me beacuse they seemed to believe Bilbo even though he had lied.
5. What functions does the setting serve in this chapter?
The functions in this chapter serve sort of a hiding place for Bilbo and the company.
6.One of the techniques Tolkien Uses to Suppoert the conciet that the narrator is relating true story is to make connections between the origins of the real-world language and the imaginary world of the story.
